About the fellowship

The BIS PhD Fellowship Programme 2027 is run by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland — the institution that supports central banks’ pursuit of monetary and financial stability and acts as a bank for central banks. The programme gives PhD students the chance to contribute to BIS economic research and analysis, working with expert economists and research analysts in the Monetary and Economic Department (MED). Fellows gain first-hand insight into BIS research and policy work, access the BIS seminar series and visiting research fellows, and benefit from flexible, hybrid working — a blend of on-site work at the Basel office and home office.

Which BIS fellowship is this? BIS runs several fellowship lines. This article covers only the PhD Fellowship Programme (current PhD students). It is not the BIS Research Fellowship (established academics; deadline 31 March), the Central Bank Research Fellowship (member central-bank nominees), the Lamfalussy Senior Research Fellowship, or the BIS Innovation Hub programmes.

  • Familiarity with major financial/monetary databases is beneficial.
  • All nationalities welcome — BIS hires globally and offers relocation support for the successful candidate. BIS’s corporate language is English.
