About the programme
The British Academy Elevate Programme is the Academy’s flagship development offer for early-career researchers in SHAPE — the Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy. The Leadership Stream is its leadership-development strand: a structured programme that builds the skills, networks and confidence researchers need to lead in academic and public life, from running research teams and influencing policy to shaping the future of their disciplines.
Elevate runs as a three-year pilot backed by a £5 million investment from Wellcome, and participation is free of charge — participants do not pay to take part. Each year a selective cohort of 62 participants is drawn from members of the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (ECRN) and Wellcome-funded researchers, and the programme is designed to work across early, mid and late early-career stages. Delivery mixes roughly ten in-person sessions of one to two days at locations across the UK (for UK-based participants, who are expected to travel) with online provision for those based outside the UK.
