About the scholarship
The UdeM Exemption Scholarship for International Students is Université de Montréal’s flagship funding route for students from outside Canada. Instead of a separate scholarship competition, every international applicant is automatically evaluated for a tuition-fee exemption when they apply for admission — the amount depends on study level and academic record, and is deducted directly from tuition fees. It applies to all academic disciplines offered at UdeM.
UdeM renewed the exemption scholarship for the Winter 2026, Summer 2026, Autumn 2026 and Winter 2027 terms, confirming the programme is live for upcoming intakes.
Eligibility
- An international student — not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Students from France and French-speaking Belgium are excluded (they benefit from separate tuition agreements).
- Hold a valid study permit for Canada (CAQ and federal study permit as applicable).
- Enrolled full-time in an eligible bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme.
- Not benefiting from another tuition-fee exemption scholarship.
- Meet the admission requirements of the chosen programme — the strength of the academic record is the only criterion used to set the exemption level.
Benefits
- Undergraduate: Level A $13,740.60 per year or Level B $6,548.40 per year, applied directly to tuition fees.
- Master’s: partial exemption — $15,150.00 per year for research programmes, $10,788.75 per year for non-research programmes.
- PhD: a complete waiver of the additional tuition fees charged to international students — $22,908.60 per year, letting doctoral students pay roughly the same fees as Québec graduate students for the entire duration of their studies.
- The exemption is deducted from tuition automatically — it is not a cash stipend and does not cover accommodation or living costs.
