About the scholarship
Swanath is run by the Student Development Cell of the All India Council for Technical Education, which works under the Ministry of Education. Its premise is that a student who has lost a parent, or whose parent can no longer work, should not also lose a technical education for want of money. The scholarship therefore targets hardship first and academics second: there is no published marks cut-off in the sources checked, but the hardship category and the income ceiling are strict.
The award is a lump sum of Rs 50,000 a year, meant to cover the college fee and study costs — a computer, stationery, books, equipment and software. The scheme is explicit that no additional grant is payable in place of hostel charges or medical charges, so students who need hostel support must arrange that separately.
Benefits
- Rs 50,000 a year for every year of study, up to four years for degree students and up to three years for diploma students.
- Students entering in later years receive the award for their remaining years: three, two or one year for second, third and fourth-year degree entrants respectively, and correspondingly fewer years for later-year diploma entrants.
- Two thousand scholarships a year, split equally between degree and diploma students.
