About the scheme
Introduced in 2006-07 under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme for wards and widows of Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles personnel supports higher technical and professional education for the families of the forces that guard India’s borders, fight insurgency and protect its vital installations. The forces covered are the Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Industrial Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, National Security Guard and Assam Rifles. The scheme is administered by the Welfare and Rehabilitation Board, and applications are made on the National Scholarship Portal.
Keep this track separate from the scheme’s sibling tracks, which carry their own counts and are already covered elsewhere on this site. Combined guides often quote 5,500 fresh scholarships for ex-servicemen’s wards, 500 for State and UT police wards and 150 for RPF and RPSF wards; those are different tracks with different administrators. The CAPF and Assam Rifles track described here offers 2,000 fresh scholarships a year of its own, divided equally between boys and girls.
Who can apply
- Be the ward — dependent child, including an adopted or step-child — or widow of CAPF or Assam Rifles personnel in one of these categories: personnel killed in action or during service; personnel disabled due to action or service-related causes; retired or serving personnel below officer rank; or ex-personnel holding a Gallantry Award.
- Have scored at least 60% marks in Class 12 or an equivalent examination for a fresh application. Renewals require at least 50% in the previous academic year.
- Be enrolled in a full-time first professional degree course — engineering, medicine, nursing, law, management, architecture, veterinary science, agriculture and allied sciences, and similar courses — at a recognised, accredited institution (UGC, AICTE, Medical Council or equivalent).
- There is no income ceiling, and married daughters are eligible. Applicants already receiving another central or state scholarship for the same purpose are not eligible.
Selection follows a priority order that favours those most affected by service: first, wards and widows of personnel killed in action; then wards of ex-personnel with Gallantry Awards; then wards and widows of personnel who died in harness; then wards of personnel disabled in action; then wards and widows of personnel whose death was attributable to service; then wards of retired personnel; and finally wards of serving personnel below officer rank. Within the merit list, ties are resolved in favour of female students.
Not eligible: wards of civilian employees of the CAPFs, Assam Rifles or State and UT police; students in correspondence or distance-learning professional courses; students already holding another scholarship, stipend or financial assistance for the same purpose; students who have already availed themselves of this scholarship; diploma courses that do not lead to a degree; master’s programmes, except MBA and MCA where that is the first professional course; students at institutions not approved under the UGC Act, not recognised by AICTE, or lacking the required accreditation for their course; students studying abroad; and students who change course or college after selection and take fresh admission in a later year, which leads to permanent cancellation.
Benefits
Boys receive Rs 2,500 a month, or Rs 30,000 a year, and girls receive Rs 3,000 a month, or Rs 36,000 a year, for up to five years depending on the course, paid once a year by Direct Benefit Transfer to the student’s bank account after verification of attendance and academic performance. For integrated programmes such as B.Tech plus M.Tech, coverage extends to the initial years of the programme. The amount is a fixed monthly rate, not a reimbursement of fees: it does not vary with the institution’s fee structure.
